A Thousand Names for Joy: "The Tao, the Now...and Finally,

the How"

Spiritual masters ancient and modern exhort us to relinquish control, to be fair and kind to others, and to face our problems with equanimity in order to live in peace and joy. It's the wisdom of the ages. But how can we live this wisdom?

In his Tao Te Ching, Lao-tzu advised, "Do your work, then step back; The only path to serenity." Byron Katie provides us with "the How of the Tao"—The Work, a meditative self-inquiry consisting of four questions and a "turnaround"—which enables us to end suffering by investigating the stressful beliefs that create it.

No one knows how to "let go"—we all would if we could—but anyone answer these remarkably simple yet profound questions: Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it's true? How do you react when you believe that thought? Who would you be without the thought? When we inquire for the love of truth, we needn't let go of anything; "it" lets go of "us," life flows through us effortlessly and we experience the deep and abiding joy of "what is."

We will use Katie's new book A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are as a textbook for these workshops. Highly recommended: Katie's first two books, Loving What Is and I Need Your Love - Is That True?

lilly"Doing The Work allowed me to see that wanting to be a successful artist is another identity trap that separates me from my focus on creation. I have never been so productive as a painter as I was the last two weeks. Things are really good and easy as I come to know who I am and just do my job." —Robert, Inquiry Group Participant,
